Velvet Elvis

The book of the moment, for Christians anyway. For me too, I haven’t felt excited and liberated from reading for a while!

  • Jesus is about reality not religion.
  • When God is figured out with definitions and lines, it’s no longer God. That’s someone we made up. God is bigger than the Christian faith.
  • “Brick-world” is the term for some Christians’ perspective. Where doctrines and correct theology are the point. And often it appears as though you have to agree with all the doctrines if you want to join.
  • Questions are rooted in humility. They bring freedom, acknowledge that we don’t have the answer. And we don’t have too. Is the bible the best God can do? Why did he do it that way?Christianity is about celebrating the myserty, not conquering it.
  • We have to interperet and make decidions about the bible. In community not just alone, because we all bring our own agenda, lenses and baggage to our reading. God has spoken, through the Word, and all the rest is commentary.
  • Bible stories still happen to us today, they’re nost just history. We like Adam and Eve, sucummb to temtpation all the time. The bible is peoples written accounts of experiences with God. When we take the bible seriously we are taking God seriously. It’s a matter of trusting that God knows what He’s doing with the bible .
